L& is a string quartet composed in 2009 that explores using genetic algorithms to modulate melodic forms. A familiar melody is distributed among the four strings, who all play at the same time. The algorithm attempts to evolve patterns where each note is given its own "space" - where no other notes are playing. The piece has 6 sub-sections. For each section, the total duration of the melody is cut in half, moving from 64 bars in the first sub-section to 2 bars in the final section. Articulation and dynamics are calculated based on each note's fitness in terms of its overlap with notes from other instruments.
